An excellent burn, more macarons, some fall sweaters, and how to help Morocco and Libya

Last weekend, I had the best time visiting Mjomii with a dear friend. Mjomii is a family-owned and operated macaron and coffee shop in Northwest Columbus. It opened its brick-and-mortar location in late 2022 but has been around since 2018. As we have already established, I love macarons, and I’m always willing to try different shops’ takes on my favorite cookie. Mjomii’s macarons’ flavor profile is decidedly East meets West: yuzu and taro flavored macarons sit alongside strawberry cream and raspberry ones. Their menu has a set of classic flavors as well as a set of set of rotating flavors, which is a great strategy for getting me in the door often.

Last week I tried six flavors: yuzu, taro, milk and lavender (fantastic), vanilla rose, grapefruit, and honeydew. Their macarons are kept cold, which may be controversial, but I like macarons both at room temperature and refrigerated. Mjomii’s macarons were incredibly flavorful, and I’m disappointed in myself for only buying a half dozen. My friend also tried their matcha and said it was excellent.
The shop has a clean, minimalist aesthetic and top-notch branding. Their logo features JJ the tuxedo cat, who is absolutely adorable—look at his little nose!
I am a totally sucker for good merch—along with a good macaron—and I may need to return to Mjomii soon for some cookies, tea, and a branded treat!
Note: Mjomii is closing for a month for renovations and family travel starting September 18, so if you want to try the macarons (and matcha), head in this weekend! The shop will open up again on October 13.
Other Things I Like
Kiel James Patrick first came on my radar through an Instagram ad a few years ago: KJP’s classic JFK for President sweatshirt popped onto my screen, and I bought it pretty much immediately for my husband, who is a massive Kennedys fan. I signed up for their mailing list and have been happy with the purchases I’ve made since (my most complimented piece is my “Rosé All Day” cap. KJP’s style is New England preppy, and both owners have well-curated Instagrams that underscores that point.
I have been thinking about buying another purchase: a fall-themed sweater. KJP has both generic autumn (leaves, apples, foxes, squirrels) and Halloween (ghosts, bats, black, cats, witches)* themed sweaters, most of which are Fair Isle style. I have, in the past two years, made a choice about what I wanted, second-guessed myself because I have found a few more that I liked, and then forgotten to buy one because I’m still not sure which one is my favorite. Based on my track record, I am 40 percent confident that I will buy one this year, even though I covet them all.
I currently have my eye on the Witching Hour sweater, the Great Vermont Pumpkin Festival sweatshirt, and the Big Cozy Fall Leaf sweater. By the time you read this, I probably will have bought… nothing because I am sure I will still not have been able to make up my mind. Be better than me… buy a great sweater for the fall.
*I panicked if pumpkin sweaters would fall under “generic autumn” or “Halloween” so I didn’t include them, but obviously there are a lot of pumpkin themed sweaters. And hats!
Morocco & Libya
A 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit Morocco, a country dear to both my husband and myself, last Friday, near the Atlas Mountains. At the time of writing (September 12), nearly 3,000 people had died from the earthquake. If you want to help, AP has a round up of different organizations on the ground right now who are trying to help survivors in Morocco. World Central Kitchen, run by DC’s own José Andrés, is already providing food and water to survivors and using their helicopters to help deliver aid.
On September 10, Tropical Storm Daniel hit Libya, breaking two dams near the city of Derna. At the time of writing (September 12), over 2,000 people died in the floods and over 10,000 are missing. Time Magazine has pulled together a list of organizations that are working to help survivors after the floods; Libya has struggled in recent years due to war and political instability, which have affected Derna specifically.
That’s it! I hope you have a great rest of your week! And stay safe… it’s a jungle out there.
